SUBJECT AND PREDICATE

 LESSON 2: SUBJECT AND PREDICATE

Every complete sentence has two parts, the subject and the predicate.

         (1)    The part which names the person or thing we are speaking about. This is called the Subject of the sentence. The subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about.

        (2) The part which tells something about the Subject. This is called the Predicate of the sentence. While the predicate is the rest  part of the sentence which tells us what the subject is doing.

In other words, we must have a subject to speak about and we must say or predicate something about that subject.

Let me give you an example to understand this concept clearly.

Rohit is playing cricket.
This sentence has two parts, here ,Rohit is the person whom we are talking about so, Rohit is the subject and what is he doing is the predicate i.e. playing cricket

1)      My father (Subject) drives a car. (predicate)

             2)      The girls (Subject) are singing in the class. (predicate)

                                   3)      The Mobile (Subject) is placed on the table for charging. (predicate)

4)     Mr. Smith(Subject) is my teacher. (predicate)

         NOTE: The Subject of a sentence usually comes first, but occasionally it is put after the Predicate;

         For Example:-

                      1) Here comes the taxi.

NOTE:    In Imperative sentences the Subject is left out:-

          For Example:-

                     1) Sit down. [Here the Subject You is understood.]

                     2) Thank him. [Here too the Subject You is understood.]

Here is a simple exercise for you do.

Separate the Subject and the Predicate in the following Sentences:

               1. The boy stood on the last bench.

              2. The singing of the birds makes me happy.

              3. A good boy passed the examination.

              4. It is very hot.

             5. The cow gives us milk.

              6. The earth revolves around the sun.

              7. Edison invented the phonograph.

              8. Delhi is the capital of India.

              9. We cannot make the ocean dry.

             10. No man can serve two masters.

Lets understand it with some examples

The Subject is in red colour  and the Predicate is in Green  in the following Sentences:

           1. The boy stood on the last bench.
